WHY
Q. Hey Chief AJ why did you fine it necessary to improve up on
Col. Cooper's Scout Rifle set up?
Way back in ‘86 I read Col Cooper’s articles on the Scout Rifle about being able
to put both eyes on a moving target, mounting the Rifle and interfacing the
cross hairs on target. Yes, having a sight picture on a running or flying target
at once as the rifle touched your shoulder and sending a projectile down range
in a fraction of a second.
I started building up Col Cooper style Scouts then in ‘87 with the long eye
relief low power Scout Scopes by Burris and Leopold. I did this on this Ruger
10/22’s for training Scouts at Rifle Camp and on MINI 14’s in .223, MINI 30, and
Bolt Action Muscle Scouts like my .416 Mag Scout that has taken Big Game around
the World now.
For 20 years I taught Scout Rifle Shooting with the strict 9 to 14” eye relief
forward on the barrel mounted scopes. My clients learned to use this set-up and
shot the running clay rabbits and flying trap birds. Some clients has trouble
learning to use the way forward scout scopes. On sunny days the way forward
Scout Scopes not be used due to being blotted out by the Sun. When on a hunt in
the field the size of antlers could not be determined by the low power scopes.
RECAP WHY, I looked for an improved Scout Rifle Concept!
1. Hard for about 40% of shooters to learn to shoot with.
2. At times the Sun blots out any sight picture.
3. Low power a handicap at times.
4. The barrel does not haft to be drilled and taped for the new Concept.
5. The New Scout Concept can be installed with a screw driver in 30 minutes or less.
Therefore:
Between the 2006 Rifle Season and 2007 Rifle Camp season I experimented with
many different scopes and ways to mount the Scout Scope. I enlisted the help of
many shooters who volunteered quickly to shoot my ammo and experimental Scout
Rifles. We shot paper targets, rolling clay rabbits and standard trap birds
going away at 55 mph.
RESEARCH & DEVELMENT RESULTS:
My Shooters and I came up with a improved Scout Concept Rifle using a scope with
eye relief of 5 to 6 inches mount forward off the receiver and did not need to
have the barrel drilled and tapped. A scope with a big clear sight picture
adjustable for all who look through the scope. A variable power scope from 1.5X
or fast moving targets to 4.5X when you have time to take a rest and study the
target in detail. The Scope that won out has camera lens and is rubber coated
that has proven to be an asset.

FIELD TESTED DURING THE 2007 RIFLE CAMP SEASON!
All during the 2007 season of Rifle Camp I took the Col Cooper way forward Scout
mounted rifles and my new improved Concept Rifles to camp for my clients to
shoot. I did not tell them I was in a year long quest to see which rifles the
clients preferred and shot the best with.
WHAT THE YEAR LONG TRIAL PRODUCE:
My clients could go to the rifle rack and pick up a fine tuned rifle with open
sights, red dots scopes, way forward scopes or my new improved Scout Concept
mounted scope. I gave them training with all of the above. A the end of the day
90% chose the new improved Scout Concept Rifles to shoot 55 mph flying clay trap
targets. Scores with the new rifles were higher also. 80% of the 2007 season
clients now have a new Scout Concept Rifle.
2008 RIFLE CAMP SEASON:
I still take a old style Col Cooper way forward mounted rifle to camp so that my
clients can try and compare. So far this year all clients have leaned to hit
moving targets quickly with the new Scout Concept Rifles.
The Concept applied to many other Rifles:
I like to hunt deer with a blot action .308 so I
found a special long mount to apply the Scout Concept to a hunting rifle:

My new Scout Concept works very well on the new Ruger MINI 14 & MINI 30:
