SLINGSHOT TRAP SHOOTING
7/23/08 UPDATE: Chief AJ back in training for another aerial shooting record:
It was Fred Bear that started the practice of shooting 9" disk tossed in the air
with his bow and arrows. Chief AJ is getting ready to hit thousands and
thousands of flying targets with paint balls out of the Cheif AJ.com slingshots
that are in production now. Note: you can see the paint ball about to hit the
flying target. The Chief will use the same size wooden disk thrown the same way
Fred Bear did this. The paper work in now on file with Guinness World Record
Book and the Big Shooting Sports Event will start Sept 27, 2008 at Tuscola, IL.
Here's is how you can help set the Record and get a WORLD RECORD CERTIFICATE of
PARTICIPATION:
The Chief needs shooters to train with.
Bring a 1000 paintballs and come to Tuscola, IL Exit 212 of I 57 in Central Illinois and shoot with the Chief while He gets ready to set the new Record on the outdoor TV show ANYTHING WILD!! Your name will go into the Record Book and AJ needs paintballs.
These targets give instant visual gratification as they are hit with the .68cal shot hard by Chief AJ.

* 7/22/08 AJ may have arrived at the ideal kinetic friendly slingshot at the bottom of page!
Here is the full story on learning to hit moving targets with a sling shot by World Champion Shooter "Chief AJ"

Chief AJ knows shooting disciplines, shooting sports physiology and human kinetics (the movement of the human body in motion). Back in 1956 Chief AJ enrolled in the first class on Human Kinetics taught at the University of Illinois, Champaign, IL campus. He was even used as a human “guinea pig” by the Professors while the Science of Kinetics was being developed. The Chief wanted to apply all of this to slingshot shooting but did not have enough knowledge of slingshot equipment so he sought the advice of Gary “Flatband” Miller. This was done via computers for Flatband lives in NJ and the Chief in IL. E-mails, photos and advice burned up the machines.
Chief AJ knew he needed equipment advice when He bought several of the wire
frame sling shots on the market today.
The Chief soon found out that there wire jobbers fight against the natural
movement of the bones in the human forearm. To hold the wire frames with that
wrist brace is contrary to how the ulna and radius bones of the forearm
function. With the knowledge of how the forearm works the Chief by shooting
these wire jobbers soon saw that really serious could not be achieved.
From “Flatband” the Chief learn about {shooting over the top} that is using flat
latex rubber bands that are tied in front of the frame and pull of the top of
the two rounded wooden forks.
In doing Research and Development (R&D) Chief AJ cut out many wooden frames
and
obtained from Flatband several types of bands and pouches. Tapped cut, straight
cut, natural color, red rubber, cupped pouches, ball formed pouched and plain
strips of leather for a pouch. The Chief was unaware of all this great
equipment for Slingshot shooting. It has been just to much fun doing the R&D to
fine the slingshot equipment that matches up with the natural movement of the
human arm. Yes, AJ tried shooting with the latex rubber tubes which are e-z to
get at a big box store and they work but not as fast as the flat bands.

Hey
Chief AJ was does speed have to do with Slingshot shooting? The Chief has a
test for Rifle Shooting that is breaking flying standard clay pigeons out of a
standard trap throwing a 55 mph clay bird target. AJ has taught over 3,000
clients to shoot trap with a rifle putting a single projectile down range to hit
a flying clay bird, a moving target. The Chief shot a World Record on Moving
Targets back in ’87 hitting 40,060 straight blocks tossed into the air without a
miss with a .22 rifle. This
skill learned doing this lead to teaching Moving Target Marksmanship at Rifle
Camp training unique to Chief AJ. In the field AJ has taken Deer on the run with
a longbow, recurve bow and .308 Scout Rifle. With Scout Rifles in .223 Chief AJ
has bagged running Wolfs in Alaska and Coyotes in Illinois. He got a Alaska
Bear with a .416 Mag Scout Rifle and Caribou both on the run. So will this
entire shooting experience carrier over to moving targets with a Slingshot????
The slingshot R&D was to determine if applied human kinetics, shooting sports physiology and Moving Target Marksmanship was just for rifle and bow shooting but all shooting - even slingshots. The Chief with all types of slingshots learned to shoot clays off the Blue Board and off of his flight simulator (a rebar rod that holds a clay on edge as the target truly flies). He tried all the formed, cupped and flat pouches with loads of bbs, ¼” steel balls, 3/8”steel balls and the white tracer ½” marbles. Hey, Chief AJ being a US Marine calls these white balls shoot’en 50cal for there are 50 caliber, one half inch.
When AJ could break the clays off the flight simulator and blue board
at
35 yards he began planning a trip to the local Sportsman’s Club at Sadiours, IL
about 10 miles form his home in Tuscola, IL. At this point on July 14, 2008 the
Chief did not know for sure if Slingshot trap shooting was quite possible or
not. So, he assembled a Do-All-Trap, person to run the trap,
several slingshot for He pulls hard and fast and does break equipment. Then He
thought if He was successful he needed still photos for his web site.
Off to the club three of them went on Monday Morning July 14. They set up on the club grounds by the fishing lake. The Club Host, Mrs Heart drove up on a 4X4 and told the three that they could not shoot over the lake and were in the wrong place to shoot a 12 ga. Then the trap person, Pat Donalds told the Club Official, Mrs. Hear, that Chief AJ was only using a Slingshot. On Her cell phone she obtained higher permission for Chief AJ to “go for it with his slingshot”. The Club Official, Mrs. Hear did stay and watch the whole two hours of Slingshot Trap Shooting all the time calling people on her cell phone bragging on Chief AJ’s Slingshot shooting.
As
Pat sent out the flying clays Chief AJ soon learned that the 50cal balls did
better than the loads of bbs. A single 50cal balls broke the birds out much
farther
and sure did
a lot of visual gratification as the clay trargets did burst. It did not take
long for Chief AJ to develop a favorite frame and pouch. It was Shooting Over
the Top frame that did the skill of Trap Shooting with a Slingshot. The flat
bands, ball fitted pouch with the 50 cal “tracer marbles” sure did work.
Meanwhile the photographer, Corinne Huffer took 318 still shots capturing many
slingshot breaks of the flying clays as Chief AJ shot for two hours. The Chief
was successful in breaking clays both outgoing from the trap and incoming wising
over head at 65mph.
In
this photo you can see that the sling and pouch have been shot and the 50cal
ball in on the way to the flying bird.
Center
Shot: You can see the clay bird was hit in the middle for the pieces are
bursting out in a circle. Oh, the Chief did a little overkill on the follow
through.
As of July 17, 2008 Chief AJ is this far in developing a human body friendly pinpoint shooting slingshot. The finish Chief AJ logo Slingshot will have a wooden frame, shoot over the top of the forks, have flat bands and a ball fitted pouch. It will be able to shoot a single bb, load of bbs, single large balls and good old rocks. To get the Chief AJ Logo Slingshot into production the Chief needs investors, marketing adviser and packeageing advice.
